BATTERY STORAGE IN THE ACT AND NEARBY NSW
Storage sized on your evenings, not on the biggest number in the brochure.
A battery is worth what it saves you every evening, plus what it is worth on the nights the power goes out. We size storage against your own load profile, we are straight about what the federal discount is worth at each size, and we will tell you when a smaller battery is the better buy.

WHAT ACTUALLY DECIDES IT
The things that shape your design.
What you use after dark
This is the number that sizes a battery. Total daily use matters much less. A household that uses 20 kilowatt hours a day but most of it between six in the morning and four in the afternoon needs far less storage than the total suggests.
Whether you want backup
Running through a blackout is a different design to saving money. It needs a backup port, a dedicated circuit or a whole home changeover, and capacity kept in reserve. It also costs more, so it should be a decision rather than an assumption.
How much power, not just how much energy
Kilowatt hours tell you how long it runs. Kilowatts tell you what it can run at once. An induction cooktop, a heat pump and an oven together will find the limit of a small battery very quickly.
Your inverter, and whether it stays
A hybrid inverter does solar and battery in one box and is usually the cleaner answer on a new install. An AC coupled battery bolts onto solar you already have without touching the existing inverter. Which suits depends on what is already on the wall.
Where it physically goes
Weight, clearances, ventilation, fire separation and how far it sits from the switchboard. A garage wall is easy. Under a bedroom window is not. AS/NZS 5139 decides more of this than preference does.
Whether you will join a virtual power plant
The federal discount requires a battery capable of joining one. It does not require you to actually join. In NSW there is a separate payment for signing up, and in the ACT there is not. Joining also means someone else can use your battery at times, which is worth understanding before you sign.
Worth knowing before you compare quotes
The number that matters is usable capacity, not nominal, and not the number on the box. Ask for usable kilowatt hours, continuous output in kilowatts, the warranted throughput or cycle count, and what the warranty guarantees is left at ten years. Then ask what the system will actually deliver through your own inverter, because a battery rated at 10 kilowatts behind a 5 kilowatt inverter gives you five.

WHAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY BUYING
What is included, and what is not.
Included as standard
- A load profile review using your own interval data where your meter has it
- Battery, mounting, isolation, protection and all the electrical work
- Hybrid or AC coupled design, and integration with existing solar where you have it
- Network application and approval, and the inverter set to your approved export limit
- Assignment of your federal battery certificates, with their value taken off the price up front
- Compliance certificate, monitoring set up, and a walk through of how to read it
What can add to it
We look for every one of these before quoting. Anything that applies is priced in writing before you commit.
- Switchboard upgrade where the existing board cannot take the additional protection
- Backup changeover work, a dedicated essential loads circuit, or whole home backup switching
- A concrete pad, bollards, weather enclosure or shade structure where the location calls for it
- Long cable runs where the battery cannot sit reasonably close to the switchboard
- A network assessment if you are asking for an export limit above the standard one
- Replacing an existing inverter that is not compatible with the battery you want
What counts as a standard job
A standard job is a wall or floor mounted battery within a reasonable cable run of the switchboard, in a position that meets the clearance and fire separation rules without building work, on a board that can take the extra protection, with either no backup or a single essential loads circuit. Anything beyond that is priced in writing first.
WHAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY CLAIM
Rebates, and who they are for.
Rebates change often and most of them have conditions that decide whether you qualify. These are the ones that apply here, with the catch stated rather than buried.
ACT
Cheaper Home Batteries, the federal discount
Your battery earns small-scale certificates at 6.8 per usable kilowatt hour for installs between May and December 2026, and we take their value off the price up front. The full rate applies to the first 14 kilowatt hours, 60 per cent of it from 14 to 28, and 15 per cent from 28 to 50. The battery must be between 5 and 100 kilowatt hours and capable of joining a virtual power plant, though you do not have to join one. One battery per address, once.
ACT
Sustainable Household Scheme
Loans from 2,000 to 20,000 dollars at 3 per cent over up to 10 years for ACT homeowners, covering battery storage among other things. You attend a free Everyday Climate Choices workshop first and the loan is credit assessed. Concession card holders in the Home Energy Support Program can borrow up to 10,000 dollars at zero interest instead.
ACT
There is no ACT battery rebate
The ACT Government does not offer a household battery rebate. The battery discount Canberrans receive is the federal one, and the ACT contribution is the loan scheme above. Anyone describing the discount as an ACT rebate has it wrong.
NSW
Cheaper Home Batteries, the federal discount
The same federal certificate discount applies in NSW, at the same rates and with the same conditions on size and virtual power plant capability. It comes off your price up front.
NSW
Virtual power plant connection incentive
NSW withdrew its own battery installation discount when the federal program began, but it still pays an incentive for connecting a battery to a virtual power plant, and that one does stack with the federal discount. It scales with the capacity you make available, capped at 28 kilowatt hours, and is paid once per connection point through the virtual power plant provider. The amount varies by provider and by the certificate market, so we will not quote you a fixed figure.
NSW
Home Energy Saver
Zero interest loans of up to 15,000 dollars covering batteries and switchboard upgrades, for households with a combined income up to 210,000 dollars. A discount of up to 4,000 dollars for lower income households and renters has been announced and is not open yet.
NSW
Batteries for apartment buildings
Open since 1 September 2026 for buildings of four or more units, for systems between 20 and 200 kilowatt hours of usable capacity, installed outdoors, and paired with solar within 90 days either side. The discount is larger where new solar goes on at the same time.
Rebate information last checked 20 September 2026. We confirm what you qualify for, in writing, before anything is ordered.
HOW IT ACTUALLY GOES
From first call to switched on.
- 1
We pull your interval data
If your meter records half hourly data, your retailer can give you twelve months of it. That single file answers the sizing question better than any rule of thumb.
- 2
We model the evening
How much you draw after the sun drops, on a normal day and in the worst week of winter, and what a given battery size would actually cover.
- 3
Design and fixed price
The exact battery and inverter, usable capacity and continuous output stated plainly, the federal discount already deducted, and the backup scope named if you want backup.
- 4
Network approval
The battery is part of your connection, so it goes to Evoenergy or Essential Energy along with the rest of the system.
- 5
Installation and commissioning
Mounting, protection, integration with existing solar, and commissioning to AS/NZS 5139 and AS/NZS 4777.
- 6
Handover
Monitoring on your phone, the backup circuits demonstrated if you have them, and a clear explanation of what the battery will and will not carry.
THE QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED
Straight answers.
How big should my battery be?
Start with what you use after dark, not your total. For most households around here that is somewhere between half and two thirds of daily use, which puts a typical home between 10 and 16 usable kilowatt hours. Going much larger means paying close to full price for capacity you will rarely empty, because the federal discount drops above 14 kilowatt hours.
Will it run the whole house in a blackout?
Only if it is designed to, and only within its power rating. Many installs back up a selected circuit or two, which covers lights, the fridge, the internet and some power points. Whole home backup is possible, but it needs changeover switching and enough continuous kilowatts to start what you turn on.
Can I add a battery to solar I already have?
Usually yes. An AC coupled battery works alongside your existing inverter without replacing it. The federal discount does not require your existing solar to be new, and you can also claim it if you have no solar at all.
Do I have to join a virtual power plant?
No. The federal discount requires the battery to be capable of joining one, not that you do. In NSW there is a separate payment if you choose to join. Read the contract, because joining means the provider can charge and discharge your battery at times that suit the grid rather than you.
How long will a battery last?
Warranties are usually written as a number of years or an amount of energy through the battery, whichever comes first, with a guaranteed capacity remaining at the end, commonly around 60 to 70 per cent. The honest comparison is throughput and end of warranty capacity, not the headline year count.
Should I wait?
The federal discount falls to 5.7 certificates per usable kilowatt hour on 1 January 2027 and to 5.2 on 1 July 2027. On a 13 kilowatt hour battery that is a meaningful drop across next year. If storage is on your list for the next twelve months, earlier is worth more.
Not sure whether a battery makes sense for you yet?
Send us twelve months of usage and we will model it against a few sizes, including the federal discount at each one, and tell you plainly if the answer is not yet.
Where people usually go next
Prices on this website are for the ACT and within 35 km of Canberra. Further out, the same system usually costs 15–30% more for travel, time away and the extended warranty responsibility that comes with distance. We confirm the final price before you commit to anything.
