WHAT IS AVAILABLE NOW
The rebates, loans and discounts that apply to solar, batteries, EV chargers and heat pump hot water in the ACT and NSW, in plain English. We checked every program in September 2026 and apply whatever you are eligible for on your quote.
Federal rebates, everywhere in the ACT and NSW
Rooftop solar
Solar systems earn small-scale technology certificates (STCs), taken off your price as an upfront discount.
- Certificates = system size in kW × zone rating × years left in the scheme.
- Canberra is Zone 3 (rating 1.382).
- Installed in 2026: 5 years. In 2027: 4 years. The scheme ends after 2030.
- Example: 6.6 kW in Canberra earns about 45 STCs in 2026, about 36 in 2027.
Home batteries (Cheaper Home Batteries)
Batteries earn STCs for every kWh of usable capacity, also taken off your price.
- Installed May to December 2026: 6.8 STCs per kWh. From 1 January 2027: 5.7, then lower every six months to 2030.
- Full rate on the first 14 kWh, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh, 15% from 28 to 50 kWh, nothing above 50 kWh.
- Set by the installation date. One rebated battery per home.
- Needs an approved, VPP-capable battery, an accredited installer, and new or existing solar.
- Example: a 13.5 kWh battery earns about 91 STCs.
ACT households
Sustainable Household Scheme loans
Loans of $2,000 to $20,000 at 3% interest over up to 10 years, through Brighte, with no establishment fees.
- Covers batteries, EV chargers, heat pump hot water, reverse-cycle heating and cooling, induction cooktops, insulation and EVs.
- Rooftop solar on its own is not eligible.
- For owner-occupiers (and people living with the owner), within property value limits. A short workshop and a credit check apply.
Home Energy Support Program
For owner-occupiers with a Pensioner Concession Card, DVA Gold Card or Health Care Card.
- 50% of the cost of rooftop solar, up to $2,500.
- 50% of efficiency upgrades such as heat pump hot water, up to $2,500.
- Plus a 0% loan of up to $10,000. Batteries are not included.
Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme
Some ACT energy retailers offer discounted heat pump hot water, reverse-cycle air conditioning and insulation through this scheme. Offers vary by retailer.
NSW households
Battery connected to a virtual power plant
The NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme pays an incentive when you enrol your battery with a virtual power plant (VPP). It is paid through the VPP provider, and its value moves with certificate prices.
The separate NSW upfront battery installation incentive has been suspended for households since 1 July 2025.
Heat pump hot water
The NSW Energy Savings Scheme discounts eligible heat pumps that replace an electric or gas water heater. The discount is applied by an accredited provider and varies with certificate prices.
Home Energy Saver loans
Since June 2026, 0% loans of up to $15,000 over 10 years for households with a combined income up to $210,000, for upgrades including solar, batteries and switchboard work. Check the official page for the current eligible list.
