Why we install it
Our take on Tesla Energy.
For a single-phase home that wants the whole house kept on in a blackout, Powerwall 3 is hard to beat: one unit holds the battery and a solar inverter, it starts big motors well, and the Tesla app is polished. We size the gateway and the backup properly so it does what you expect on the day the power goes out.
What they make: Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh usable with a built-in solar inverter accepting up to 20 kW DC), Powerwall 3 Expansion packs, Backup Gateway 2, and Megapack for utility scale. Powerwall 2 is discontinued.

The honest picture.
Where they stand
Premium on price, but slipping on installer preference — and the honest version of this matters. 5th in the 2026 SolarQuotes Installer's Choice Awards for inverters with 7% (and its inverter only ships inside the Powerwall 3), and it did not make the top three for batteries; SunWiz had Tesla 4th in Australian home battery share by March 2025 and Tesla does not appear in SunWiz's published 2026 top rankings.
The warranty, in practice
Ten years from installation with a guarantee of at least 70% of the 13.5 kWh rating at year 10. For grid-export or VPP use the guarantee is ten years or 37.8 MWh of aggregate throughput, whichever comes first. Better than most on labour: SolarQuotes' launch coverage records labour cover of $800 for a Powerwall 3 replacement and $650 for a Gateway.
Who it suits
Households wanting a single-box solar-plus-battery install with the most polished app and direct manufacturer support rather than a chain of intermediaries, and existing Powerwall 2 owners expanding — since March 2026 a PW3 can now operate alongside a PW2.
What to watch
There is an active ACCC recall (PRA 2025/20611) on Powerwall 2, published 16 September 2025 and extended by a 13 April 2026 recall advertisement to units sold between 1 November 2020 and 23 August 2025: certain third-party lithium cells can fail and overheat, with reports of units smoking or emitting flames and minor property damage.
