Can I add a battery to my existing solar?
Often the first step is identifying what you already have. A battery upgrade should be assessed as a complete system, including the inverter, electrical supply and intended operating mode.

Identify your current equipment
Find the inverter brand and exact model, panel count if known, installation date and any original system paperwork. A clear photograph of the inverter label is more useful than a broad description such as a 5 kW system.
Save monitoring screenshots that show typical generation and household use, if your monitoring provides it. Tell the installer about faults, recent changes or equipment that is already scheduled for replacement.
Ask how the battery would connect
Your Home describes different ways batteries can integrate with new and existing solar, including AC-coupled and hybrid arrangements. The appropriate approach depends on the equipment and design.
Ask whether the proposal keeps the existing inverter, replaces it or adds another component. Request a simple system diagram and exact model schedule. A product described as battery-ready still needs its supported battery configurations checked.
Define the upgrade scope
Ask the quote to separate the battery, any inverter or gateway changes, electrical work, monitoring and commissioning. If backup is included, ask which circuits it serves and what limitations apply.
The equipment location and cable routes also deserve attention. Provide photographs of proposed spaces and ask the installer to assess them. Installation requirements should be confirmed by the qualified professional carrying out the design.
Protect a clear record of the system
Keep the old and new equipment records together. Ask how the upgrade affects existing monitoring, service arrangements and applicable warranties, without assuming that every original arrangement remains unchanged.
At handover, request the final model list, operating instructions, relevant documents and the point of contact for support. Ask how to recognise normal operation and what information to provide if a problem occurs.
Questions to include in your enquiry
Can my current inverter remain? Which exact battery configuration is supported? What backup equipment is included? Are there additional site works? How will the combined system be monitored?
If you are also considering extra panels or EV charging, mention those plans at the beginning. It is easier to compare a coordinated proposal when the installer knows the intended end result.
Your next step
Include the current inverter model in your enquiry.
