Home EV charger installation: what to check

Learning centre / EV charging

Choose a home charger around your vehicle and property together. The highest number on a charger label is not necessarily the charging rate your car will use.

Start with the vehicle and routine

Record the exact vehicle model and its supported AC charging capability. Note when the car is usually parked at home and how much driving you want to cover between charging sessions.

The Australian Government’s charging guide explains the relationship between charging rate, battery size and charging time. Ask for an estimate based on your routine rather than assuming a full empty-to-full charge every day.

Check electrical supply and charging rate

Ask the installer to assess the electrical supply, available capacity and proposed charging circuit. The vehicle, charger and installation can each affect the usable rate.

Compare the exact charger variant, including any single-phase or three-phase requirements. A 22 kW product listing does not mean every vehicle and home will charge at 22 kW. Request the expected configured rate in the proposal.

Plan the parking position and cable route

Show where the car is normally parked and which side its charging inlet is on. Ask whether the proposed cable reaches comfortably without creating an awkward route.

Have the installer explain mounting, cable routing and any additional works. If you live in a strata property or share a parking area, start the approvals discussion early; the Australian Government provides a separate guide for those situations.

Decide which smart features matter

List the functions you actually want: scheduling, app access, load management or charging from surplus solar. Ask which accessories, meters, internet connections or compatible energy equipment are required.

Compare what is included today with what is an optional feature. If the household already has solar or a battery, provide the equipment models so the installer can assess the proposed integration.

Prepare for a useful handover

Ask for operating instructions, app setup, the configured charging limit and support information. Record the charger model and keep its datasheet and applicable warranty documents.

During the enquiry, share the vehicle model, postcode, parking photographs and any existing solar equipment. Avoid choosing a charger purely on peak power; installation fit and day-to-day usability matter too.

Your next step

Explore charger models, then include your vehicle and parking details in your enquiry.
